4-Hour Koh Samui ATV Tours

The two-hour tour is the island’s default, and for most visitors it is the right call. So the four-hour tour has a question to answer: at roughly double the price, what does the second half actually contain?

The honest answer is that it is not more riding of the same kind. It is a different product that happens to use the same machine.

What the extra two hours buys

Jungle Quad’s four-hour Ultimate ($137) runs from a base camp on the Nathon side, where the trails run deepest, and reaches three things no shorter Koh Samui ATV tour does:

A waterfall you swim in. Not a viewpoint over one, not a seasonal maybe — the Secret Waterfall swim is listed as an inclusion. Bring swimwear and a towel. Most two-hour listings on this island describe their waterfall as season-dependent; the honest ones say so.

Wat Teepangkorn and the Magic Buddha Garden. The temple sits at the highest point of the jungle interior, and the garden holds hundreds of hand-carved stone figures rising out of the forest floor. Entrance to both is included. These are the only cultural stops on the ATV catalogue where you get off the quad for more than a photograph.

Lunch at Sora Sierra. A Thai meal at a restaurant chosen for its position rather than its menu — the Gulf of Thailand is directly below you. On a two-hour tour you get a soft drink at a cafe; here you sit down.

Add the practical differences: 4x4 safari-truck transfers island-wide including mountain villas, secure lockers at the base, cold water and cold face towels at the end, and every photo and video the guides shot sent to your phone by WhatsApp.

The other four-hour options

Jungle Quad are not the only half-day. X Quad Samui, running out of Maenam since 2012, sell three four-hour programmes and they are the premium end of the market — largely because of the machine. Where most of the island runs small utility quads, X Quad put you on a Yamaha 450cc automatic ($143 per person, 5.0 from 44 riders). On a flat trail the difference is modest; on a steep muddy climb it is the entire experience.

Their driver-plus-passenger version ($225 for the pair, 4.9 from 65) is the value pick if one of you is happy to ride pillion — it costs less than two solo seats and includes the same lunch at The 360 Jungle Route restaurant, plus soft drinks, beer and fruit at the end. There is also a CFMOTO X520 power-steering upgrade for around 1,000 THB, which on four hours with two aboard is less of a luxury than it sounds.

Is four hours too long on a quad?

For some people, yes. Four hours of jolting over rutted ground is genuinely tiring, and it is more tiring with a passenger behind you. If you have never ridden and are unsure, the three-hour Secret Waterfall tour ($106) is the sensible hedge — same base camp, same trails, same guaranteed waterfall swim, one hour less on the machine and no temple, garden or lunch.

The weight rule matters here too: Jungle Quad cap the combined load at 140 kg per ATV and ask heavier pairs to book two solo spots. On four hours, two solo quads is the better ride anyway.

The verdict

Book two hours if what you want is the ride, or if the day is already busy. Three and a half hours out of your afternoon, $67 to $85, and you will have seen the jungle and a viewpoint. Compare them on our 2-hour ATV tours page.

Book four hours if you want the half-day out: the swim, the temple, the garden, the meal and the photographs, with the riding as the thread that connects them. About five hours door to door, and the closest thing Koh Samui’s ATV catalogue has to a proper excursion.

Book three hours if the waterfall is the point but a whole morning is not.
