Koh Samui ATV Tours for Beginners

The honest answer is yes, almost certainly. Every quad on Koh Samui is automatic — a throttle, a brake and nothing to change — and no operator asks for a driving licence, because the machines are ridden on private trails rather than public roads.

But the operators are not interchangeable on this point, and the differences are published rather than hidden. It is just that nobody reads that far.

What happens during the training

At the better operators the sequence is: hotel pickup, gear, safety briefing, practice session on a dedicated training area, then the trail. That practice session is the whole difference between a first ride you enjoy and one you spend gripping the bars.

Trail Blazers ($71, 4.8 from 568 riders) include a full briefing and a practice session on every option — one hour, two hours or three — and describe their one-hour route as beginner-friendly in as many words.

Lexi Adventures ($85, 4.9 from 288) go one step further, and it is the step that matters most. As well as a dedicated training area, they sort riders into small groups by confidence and experience before setting off. A beginner is not chasing someone who rides quads at home, and does not spend the morning feeling like the problem.

Xplore ATV ($71 per group, 5.0 from 131) give you a detailed briefing and, in their own words, a few minutes to get comfortable with the machine before anyone starts an engine. Their base camp is up in the hills, so the ride begins immediately, but the pace is set by the group.

The one to avoid as a first ride

Samui Quad Motor is the island’s most-booked ATV tour by a wide margin — 1,601 reviews — and its listing states, plainly, that the activity is not suitable for beginners. Riders over 12 are tested on the machine before departure and only allowed to drive if they can control it.

That is not a criticism of the tour. It is a good tour at the lowest price on the island. It is simply not the one to book as your first time on a quad, and the operator says so.

1 hour or 2 hours for a first ride?

One hour is the safer hedge if you genuinely do not know whether you will enjoy this. It is the cheapest way to find out, the trails are the easiest on the route, and with transfers it takes about two and a half hours out of your day.

Two hours is the better ride, and by the end of the first thirty minutes most people have stopped thinking about the controls. If you are reasonably confident on a bicycle or a scooter, book two. Compare them on our 2-hour ATV tours page.

Do not book four hours as a first ride. Four hours on a quad is genuinely tiring even for people who ride, and the fatigue is what makes the last hour harder than the first.

How difficult is the terrain?

More than the brochures suggest and less than the photographs imply. The trails are dirt tracks through coconut and rubber plantations with stream crossings, rutted climbs and — from around May to November — real mud. They are not groomed circuits. Nothing is technical, but a wet rutted climb is a genuine obstacle the first time you meet one.

The mitigations are all human rather than mechanical: a guide riding with you, a pace set to the group, and permission to say you are struggling. Samui Quad Motor put it well on their own listing — if a section feels beyond you, ask the guides and they will get you through it.

What about a buggy instead?

For a nervous driver a buggy is a genuinely easier vehicle: a steering wheel instead of handlebars, a seat rather than a saddle, a roll cage, and a passenger beside you rather than behind. X Quad’s beginner buggy programme ($196 for two) is built specifically around a moderate pace for first-timers and families with young children.

Do you need a driving licence?

For a quad, no — and this is worth repeating because it is the question that stops people booking. Jungle Quad and Lexi Adventures both state on their listings that no licence and no previous experience are required. Trail Blazers do not ask for one either.
