How a Family ATV Day Works on Koh Samui
Who can drive, who rides behind, and who waits at the base camp.
Book the Duration, Not the Operator
One, two, three and four-hour tours run the same trails at different depths. Decide how long you want to be on a quad first — the operator matters far less than the length once you have picked.
Get Collected From Your Hotel
Almost every Koh Samui ATV tour includes island-wide pickup, usually about an hour before the ride starts. The base camps sit inland around Maenam, Lamai and Nathon, so the transfer is a real part of the day.
Brief, Practise, Then Ride
You are fitted with a helmet, given a safety briefing and — at the better operators — a practice session on a training area. The quads are automatic: throttle and brake, no gears, no licence needed.
Trails, Viewpoint, Waterfall, Back
The route climbs through coconut groves and rubber plantations to a mountain viewpoint. Longer tours add a temple, a waterfall swim and lunch. You finish muddy at the base camp and are driven home.

The Rules Nobody Publishes Together
Minimum Ages on Koh Samui ATV Tours, Operator by Operator
Drivers from 12 to 18. Passengers from 4 to 8. Two operators take under-4s nowhere at all.
There is no single answer to “how old does my child have to be” on Koh Samui, and that is the entire problem. The rules are set operator by operator, they are published on each listing, and they differ by six years at the driver end and four at the passenger end. Turning up at a base camp with a 14-year-old who was expecting to drive is a wasted morning.
The rules, operator by operator
Jungle Quad — drivers 12 and up if confident and capable; passengers from age 4; infants under 4 not permitted at all. Adults and children pay the same price. This is the most accommodating rule on the island for young children, and it applies to both the three-hour waterfall tour and the four-hour half day.
Trail Blazers — drivers 12 and up. A briefing and practice session on every option, which matters if a 12-year-old is going to drive.
Xplore ATV — drivers 12 and up; passengers from 8.
Oh-Hoo — drivers 16 and up; passengers 8 to 16, supervised by a parent, guardian or guide, and passengers are not allowed to drive.
Lexi Adventures — under-16s may ride only as passengers; under-12s ride free, though the operator notes free guests are not covered by personal accident insurance. Worth reading before you accept the free seat.
Orange Wave — drivers 18, passengers 8. The strictest driver rule in the catalogue.
Samui Quad Motor — children under 12 ride free as passengers; over 12 may drive subject to a control test before departure. But note their listing also says the tour is not suitable for beginners, which makes it a poor first ride for a young teenager.
Passengers, not drivers — the usual answer
For most families the child rides behind an adult, and Koh Samui’s operators price for this properly. X Quad’s driver-plus-passenger tour ($225, 4.9 from 65) covers two people on one machine for one price, against $143 for a single solo seat — so a parent and child is barely more than a parent alone.
The constraint is weight, not age. Several operators cap the combined load at 140 kg per quad, and a large adult with a large teenager behind them will exceed it. Two solo machines is the answer where the child is old enough to drive; where they are not, look at a buggy.
The four-seat buggy — the family answer
If there are more than two of you, the vehicle that solves it is X Quad’s Z950, a four-seat CFMOTO buggy available on their buggy tour for around 3,000 THB above the two-seat base price. One vehicle, one driver, everyone together, a roll cage over the lot of you — and usually cheaper than two quads with two passengers.
Their beginner buggy programme ($196 for two) is built around exactly this audience: a deliberately moderate pace, described by the operator as suitable for families with young children, reaching the island’s highest point at 630 metres with drinks and fresh fruit included.
The catch: every buggy on Koh Samui requires a car driving licence. Bring it. Full comparison on our ATV vs buggy page.
When nobody should drive
For families with very young children, or with a grandparent along, the option worth considering is not an ATV at all. The private 4x4 jungle safari ($237 for two) puts everyone in one truck with a guide and a driver, swims at Namuang Waterfall, and bends the pace to whoever needs it. Babies under one and children under two cannot join, and the operator lists back problems and wheelchair use as unsuitable — the tracks are rough. See private tours.
What to check before you book
Three things, in this order. The driver age for anyone in your party who expects to drive. The passenger age for anyone who does not. And the combined weight limit if two of you are sharing a quad.
One more, easy to miss: Jungle Quad note that not everyone in a group has to ride — non-riders can wait at the base camp viewpoint rather than buy a seat. If one person in your family has no interest, that is worth knowing before you book four places.
Prices for every combination are on our ATV tour prices page. Or check availability above — free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure.

What Families Say
Ratings and review counts are the tour operators' live figures on GetYourGuide and may shift slightly day to day.
"We were picked up on time, and we were in the tuk-tuk with 2 others. In the end, it turned out that we were the only ones who had booked the 4-hour tour. We upgraded to a more comfortable quad with a backrest (recommended if you are 2 people). Our live guide was very nice! He was clear in his signals and paid close attention. The English of all the staff was good and clear. We had a few days left in Koh Samui, and then it's really recommended! The route was incredibly beautiful, and we passed many viewpoints. We were beginner quad riders, and it was also easy for us to do."

"We were lucky enough to go alone with the guide. This allowed us to ask some questions and get some more information. Our tour was very adventurous with great views. Highly recommended if you have already ridden a quad and have some experience. The stops were also varied, and there was no shortage of cold drinks and food. The recommendation: Bring clothes that can get dirty and apply plenty of sunscreen."
"top activity! the people are incredibly kind and caring. The activity is adapted to each person. Don't hesitate and go with your eyes closed, I don't think anyone will be disappointed"
"A really cool tour! The bikes were great and the guides were super friendly. Pick-up went perfectly, everything was totally relaxed and well-organized. Excellent."

"We had a great tour with very warm and funny guides who made it a great experience. It's a great way to see and experience other less touristy corners of the island. The round trip transport worked great, the route was sufficiently challenging but doable for everyone. You'll go to the highest point on the island, a waterfall, and some viewpoints. We'd book it again anytime and recommend it to others!"
"The views are great and the trail was fun to drive. The only negative thing for me personally was the monkeys kept on chains on one of the stops."
"Top. Everything is done to make this activity enjoyable. Outing made on 25/11/20225. Transport, machine, food, guide and the route are ideal for beginners or experienced riders. There is mud, puddles of water, it goes up and down: a really pleasant and safe course (provided you follow the instructions). Everything is done for fun. If there are 2 of you on the same machine, choose the quad with great comfort. Not much more expensive but so much nicer. And a guide, Rae, who taught us about his island, his culture and was always available. Many thanks to the whole team."

Family ATV Tours on Koh Samui — Questions Parents Ask
Minimum ages, passenger rules, weight limits and the four-seat option.
It depends entirely on the operator, and the spread is six years. Trail Blazers, Jungle Quad and Xplore ATV allow drivers from 12. Oh-Hoo require 16. Orange Wave require 18. Lexi Adventures allow under-16s only as passengers. Samui Quad Motor let over-12s drive subject to a control test before departure.
Jungle Quad take passengers from age 4, which is the most accommodating rule on the island; children under 4 cannot join at all. Most other operators set 8 — Xplore, Orange Wave and Oh-Hoo all do. Samui Quad Motor and Lexi both carry children under 12 free as passengers.
On Jungle Quad, yes — adults and children pay the same. Samui Quad Motor carry under-12s free as passengers, and Lexi carry under-12s free but note that free guests are not covered by their personal accident insurance, which is worth reading before you accept the seat.
140 kg combined for rider and passenger on several Koh Samui operators, including Jungle Quad and Lexi Adventures. A large adult with a large teenager behind them will exceed it. Where the child is old enough to drive, two solo machines is the answer; where they are not, a four-seat buggy usually is.
X Quad's four-seat Z950 buggy, available on their buggy tour for around 3,000 THB above the two-seat base price. One vehicle, one driver, everyone together under a roll cage, and usually cheaper than two quads with two passengers. The catch is that every buggy on Koh Samui requires a car driving licence.
Yes — the private jungle 4x4 safari at $237 for two puts everyone in one truck with a guide and a driver, swims at Namuang Waterfall and bends the pace to whoever needs it. Babies under one and children under two cannot join, and the operator lists back problems and wheelchair use as unsuitable. See our private tours page.
Considerably. X Quad's driver-plus-passenger tour covers two people on one machine for $225, against $143 for a single solo seat — so a parent plus a child costs barely more than the parent alone, and includes the same lunch. Several other operators price the shared option the same way.
No. Jungle Quad note explicitly that non-riders can relax at the base camp viewpoint while the rest of the group takes the tour. If one member of your family has no interest in riding, that is worth knowing before you book four seats.
Operators that allow it require the child to be confident and capable, and the better ones put every rider through a practice session on a training area first — Trail Blazers do this on every option. The machines are automatic, the guides ride with the group and set the pace. Our safety guide covers what actually varies between operators.
Jungle Quad's three-hour and four-hour routes both list the Secret Waterfall swim as an inclusion and take passengers from age 4. Bring swimwear and a towel; the base camp has lockers. See our waterfall ATV tours page.
Orange Wave if anyone under 18 wants to drive — their driver minimum is the strictest on the island. And Samui Quad Motor as a first ride for a young teenager: the operator states plainly that the tour is not suitable for beginners and there is no practice session on the itinerary.
