Koh Samui’s seasons are not Thailand’s seasons
This surprises people who have been to Phuket or Bangkok. Koh Samui sits on the Gulf side and takes the northeast monsoon, so its wettest months are late October to mid-December — a period that is comfortably dry on the Andaman coast.
November is the island’s wettest month by a wide margin, averaging close to 490 mm of rain. October is not far behind at around 296 mm across roughly 20 rainy days. The drier stretch runs from mid-January into April, and February is statistically the driest and among the sunniest months, with about 44 mm over five rainy days.
The dry months: February to April
Trails. Dry, firm, fast and dusty. Fine red dust rather than mud — it goes everywhere but it brushes off, and the riding is easier for a first-timer because there are no wet rutted climbs to negotiate.
Waterfalls. Thin, and on several tours absent. Samui Quad Motor state on their own listing that the waterfall visit is seasonal and runs roughly November to January. Book their tour in March and you are booking jungle trails and viewpoints, which is a fine tour but not the one in the photographs.
Views. The best of the year. February and March are the sunniest months, which matters more than it sounds on a route whose main non-waterfall reward is a mountain viewpoint over the Gulf of Thailand.
Crowds and price. This is high season on Koh Samui, so book a day or two ahead rather than turning up.
The wet months: October to December
Trails. Genuinely muddy, and this is the reason a lot of people book. Jungle Quad put it plainly: they ride rain or shine and mud is part of the adventure. They hand out raincoats, and only weather that actually affects safety triggers a reschedule at no cost or a full refund.
Waterfalls. At their fullest. If a waterfall swim is what you came for, this is the window — and it is exactly the window the seasonal operators name.
Views. Variable. A viewpoint in a downpour is a wall of cloud.
What to expect from a booking. Tours run, and cancellations for weather are rarer than visitors assume. What changes is that you will finish coated rather than dusted.
May to September: the quiet middle
Koh Samui’s mid-year is wetter than February but far from the November peak, and it is the stretch most visitors overlook. Trails are damp enough to be interesting without being a mud bath, waterfalls hold water, and the island is quieter than in the December-to-February peak.
If you have no strong preference between dust and mud, this is a reasonable time to ride and an easier time to get a short-notice booking.
So which should you book?
Book February to April if this is a first ATV ride, if you are riding with children, or if the viewpoint and the photographs matter more than the waterfall.
