Jungle Quad describe the machine as an “easy automatic ATV: no licence or experience needed”. Lexi Adventures put it the same way: “No previous ATV experience or driving licence is required.”

Buggies: a car licence, and they check

X Quad’s four-hour buggy tour lists “a driving license is needed for the buggy ride” under its exclusions. Their beginner buggy programme says the same thing more plainly still: “Car driving license needed”, and it appears in the what-to-bring list alongside sunglasses and sunscreen.

This catches people out, because the buggy is the easier vehicle — a steering wheel instead of handlebars, a roll cage, side-by-side seats — and it is the one families and nervous drivers naturally reach for. If your licence is at home or in the hotel safe on the day, the buggy listings are closed to you and the quad listings are not.

The practical advice is simple: if you think you might book a buggy on Koh Samui, travel with your licence.

Worth separating, because the two get conflated in island advice. A guided ATV tour on private trails is a different legal situation from riding a rented scooter or motorbike on Koh Samui’s public roads, where Thai law and your travel insurance both have views about what licence you hold.
