Which Koh Samui ATV Tour Is Right for You?

This is the decision that shapes everything else, and the operator matters far less once you have made it.

One hour ($55) is the cheapest way to find out whether you enjoy riding a quad. Jungle trails, a viewpoint, and about two and a half hours out of your day once the transfer is counted. Samui Quad Motor run the standard version.

Two hours ($67–$85) is the most-booked length on the island and the point at which the ride stops feeling like a sampler — deeper trails, a mountain viewpoint, and on most routes the temple at Wat Theepangkorn. Three hours, four hours, and what the upgrade buys

Three hours ($106) exists for one reason: Jungle Quad’s Secret Waterfall route is the cheapest tour that lists a waterfall swim as an inclusion rather than a seasonal maybe.

Four hours ($137–$143) is a different product rather than more of the same. It reaches Wat Teepangkorn and the Magic Buddha Garden, includes the waterfall swim and a sit-down lunch, and takes about five hours door to door. See 4-hour ATV tours.

Then narrow by what you are

You have never ridden anything. Book Lexi Adventures ($85). They have a dedicated practice area and — the part almost nobody else offers — they sort riders into groups by confidence before the trail, so you are not chasing someone who rides quads at home. Trail Blazers ($71) are the cheaper alternative with a practice session on every option. Avoid the $55 tour as a first ride; its own listing says it is not suitable for beginners. You are two people and one of you would rather not drive. Book X Quad’s driver-plus-passenger tour — $225 covers both of you against $143 for one solo seat, with the same lunch. Watch the 140 kg combined weight limit.

You have children. The rules differ by six years between operators. Jungle Quad take passengers from 4 and let 12-year-olds drive; Orange Wave require drivers to be 18. You want the waterfall. Only two tours on the island guarantee it, both from Jungle Quad. Everything else calls it seasonal. See waterfall ATV tours.

You want the whole day to yourself. Koh Samui has no listing called a private ATV tour — it has per-group bookings and one genuinely private 4x4 safari with your own guide and driver, at $237 for two.

You would rather sit down. A buggy gives you a roll cage, a steering wheel and side-by-side seats — but every buggy operator here requires a car driving licence, and no ATV operator does. ATV vs buggy.

The three things that catch people out

The duration is riding time. Pickup runs about an hour before the tour on the operators based inland, and the bases are all inland. Budget half again on top of whatever the listing says.

The waterfall is usually conditional. One operator states plainly that theirs runs roughly November to January. Read the wording before you book a tour for a waterfall.

The price basis is not the same on every listing. Some are per person, some cover the booking for one or two people. A “$273 per group up to 2” buggy is $137 each, not double the ATV price. Our prices page sorts it out.

There is no single answer, because the tours differ by what they include rather than by quality. Xplore ATV hold the island’s highest rating at 5.0 from 131 reviews. Lexi Adventures are the best-rated with real volume at 4.9 from 288 and are the strongest choice for a first-timer. Samui Quad Motor have by far the most reviews at 1,601 and the lowest price at $55. Jungle Quad are the only operator that guarantees a waterfall swim.

How much should I expect to pay?

Between $55 and $143 per person depending on duration, or $196 to $273 for a two-person buggy. Two-hour tours, where most people end up, run $67 to $85. Hotel transfers are included on almost every listing, which is worth real money because the ATV bases are inland rather than on the coast.

Is two hours enough?

For most visitors, yes. Two hours is the point at which you have ridden a proper trail, reached a viewpoint and usually seen a temple, without giving up the day. Book four hours only if you want a half-day excursion with sightseeing and lunch rather than simply more riding.

Do I need a driving licence?

Not for a quad. Every ATV on Koh Samui is automatic and ridden on private trails, and no operator asks for a licence. Every buggy operator on the island does require a car licence, and they check at the base.

Which tour should I avoid?

None of them is bad, but match the tour to yourself. Samui Quad Motor’s $55 ride is poor value as a first-ever ATV experience because it has no practice session and the operator says so. Orange Wave is the wrong choice for a family with teenagers who want to drive, because its minimum driver age is 18.

Can I book on the day?

Usually. Most operators run morning and afternoon departures daily and have short-notice availability outside peak weeks. Booking ahead costs nothing extra and every tour here cancels free up to 24 hours before departure, so there is no reason to leave it to chance.
