Koh Samui Jungle ATV Tours: Trails, Mountains and Scenery

Plantation tracks, mountain climbs and weather-dependent waterfalls in the island's green interior.

  • Hotel pickup Check your zone
  • Route & stops Read the itinerary

A jungle ATV tour shows you the part of Koh Samui you never see from a beach road. Guided routes run through the island’s green interior on plantation tracks, forest paths and mountain trails, and longer tours often add waterfalls, temples or panoramic viewpoints.

Not every tour visits the same places. A one-hour ride usually stays fairly close to the ATV base, while two- to four-hour tours can climb further into the hills with more varied terrain and more stops.

Quick answer: Choose a two-hour jungle ATV tour for the best balance of riding, scenery and price. Book a longer tour when a particular waterfall, mountaintop view or lunch stop is worth the extra time to you.

What does a jungle ATV tour include?

A typical guided tour may include:

  • hotel pickup from selected areas;
  • helmet fitting and a safety briefing;
  • practice on easier ground;
  • guided riding through jungle or plantations;
  • dirt, stone, mud and shallow-water sections;
  • one or more scenic stops;
  • drinking water;
  • basic accident insurance;
  • return transfer to your hotel.

Longer or premium trips may add lunch, photographs, a hidden waterfall, a temple or a higher mountain route. Always read the exact itinerary: “jungle tour” describes the setting, and every operator runs its own programme.

What scenery can you expect?

Tropical jungle

The island’s hilly centre feels very different from Chaweng, Lamai or the resort-lined coast. Trails pass dense vegetation and palms, and the surface changes quickly from dry earth to shade, roots and mud.

Coconut and rubber plantations

Plantation tracks are common on the island and often connect the ATV base with the rougher sections. They make an easier warm-up before the steeper terrain.

Mountain viewpoints

Longer tours may reach high viewpoints over the island, the coastline and the Gulf of Thailand. Trail Blazers’ three-hour option, for example, lists the Khao Pom viewpoint, one of the highest points on the island. Visibility depends on cloud and rain, so treat a perfect panorama as a possible highlight, not a guarantee.

Waterfalls and streams

Some routes include a waterfall or a shallow crossing. Water flow varies with the season and recent rainfall: a waterfall can be fuller in the wetter months, but heavy rain can make access unsafe. Jungle Quad’s three-hour Secret Waterfall tour lists the waterfall swim as an inclusion; on many other tours the stop depends on the season. Our waterfall ATV tours page separates the two.

Temples and cultural stops

Some longer itineraries include a mountain temple or another cultural site; Trail Blazers’ two-hour option lists a visit to Wat Theepangkorn. Dress and behave respectfully if the tour leaves the trail for a religious stop.

How long should you book?

One-hour jungle tour

Best for first-timers, nervous riders and people short on time. Expect an introduction to off-road riding. It covers the edge of the island’s interior and little more.

Two-hour jungle tour

The best choice for most visitors. It usually allows more varied terrain and a proper scenic stop without turning into a tiring half-day. Our 2-hour ATV tours page compares the options.

Three- or four-hour tour

Best for confident riders and travellers who want the ride to be a big part of the day. Look for clear added value, such as a distant waterfall, a mountaintop viewpoint, a temple, lunch or a smaller group. The 4-hour ATV tours page covers the half-day routes.

Compare one-, two- and three-hour tours by what each extra hour adds to the route. That guide also separates riding time from the time you are away from your hotel.

Are jungle ATV tours difficult?

Difficulty varies with the operator, route and weather. Common challenges include ruts, loose stones, slopes, narrow sections and mud.

Many tours welcome complete beginners and use automatic ATVs. A responsible operator should provide practice and set a manageable pace. Some split riders by ability so beginners are not pushed to keep up with experienced drivers; Lexi’s two-hour small-group tour lists groups matched by experience.

Ask for a beginner route if you are unsure. “Jungle” does not automatically mean extreme, but expect a rougher and more physical ride than driving on a normal road.

Read the beginner ATV guide →

Do beginners follow the same route?

Sometimes. An operator may keep everyone on one route at different speeds, split the group by ability or send beginners on an easier alternative. Lexi Adventures sort riders into groups by confidence before the trail starts.

Ask whether:

  • the group is assessed during practice;
  • difficult sections can be bypassed;
  • guides ride at the front and rear;
  • a passenger option is available;
  • weather changes the beginner route.

A shorter route is not automatically easier, so look for an explicit beginner designation.

Do the routes use public roads?

Most of the riding is on private or local off-road tracks, but some itineraries link trail areas with short stretches of ordinary road. Ask whether any public road is involved and whether that changes the licence or insurance rules. Our driving licence guide explains what each operator asks for.

What are the trails like after rain?

Rain transforms the ride. Dry dust turns to mud, shallow ruts fill with water and slopes get slippery. Many people book specifically for the wetter, messier conditions.

Recent rain also makes the vegetation greener and the waterfalls fuller. The trade-off is less grip, less predictable visibility and a greater chance of route changes.

Wear closed shoes and bring a complete change of clothes. When the trails are wet or damaged, operators may:

  • slow the group;
  • avoid flooded or damaged tracks;
  • substitute a different viewpoint;
  • change or skip the waterfall stop;
  • shorten or delay the route;
  • cancel in severe conditions.

Dry weather gives firmer ground but raises plenty of dust, so dress for dirt in every season.

What can you realistically see in two hours?

Tour descriptions can make two hours sound like a full island expedition. In practice, part of the scheduled time may go on preparation, stops or transfers.

A worthwhile two-hour route should give you a substantial off-road ride and at least one memorable scenic stop, such as a waterfall, a sea viewpoint, a mountain trail or the plantation landscape.

Check whether “two hours” means riding time or the whole activity. Also read recent reviews for comments about time spent waiting or travelling on ordinary roads.

Are the routes near Chaweng and Lamai?

Many ATV bases sit outside the main resort areas, closer to the island’s jungle and mountain terrain. Current operators run from areas including Maenam, where X Quad is based, the Nathon side, where Jungle Quad has its base camp, and Lamai, where the Jungle, Mountains and Waterfalls ATV Tour starts.

You may not start near your hotel, but many tours include shared transfers from the popular accommodation areas. Confirm that your hotel is covered and how long the whole pickup and drop-off takes. Our ATV parks and operators page compares the bases.

There is no single “Koh Samui ATV trail”. Each operator rides its own private and local tracks around its base, so the route you get depends on the base, the length you book, the weather and how the group rides. Choose by the scenery and riding you want; the resort you are staying in matters less once pickup is included.

Base areaWhat the routes reachHandy for
Maenam (north coast)Remote dirt tracks, long views and lunch on the four-hour toursMaenam, Bophut, Chaweng and the north coast
Nathon side (west)Thick jungle, steep mountain climbs and a waterfall swimNathon and the west coast; east-coast pickups take about an hour
Lamai (south-east)Coconut groves, river crossings, a viewpoint and a seasonal waterfallLamai and the south coast
The hills (interior)Trail from the first minutes, stream crossings and a café, zipline and waterfall stopAnyone happy to arrange the transfer

Maenam routes

X Quad run their four-hour tours from the Maenam area on the north shore. The route follows remote dirt tracks well away from the coast, with long views for much of the day and lunch at The 360 Jungle Route restaurant; the X Quad Premium ATV Tour (1 Driver) with lunch costs $143 and holds 5.0/5 from 44 reviews. None of the X Quad tours includes a waterfall swim.

Nathon and west-side routes

Jungle Quad’s base camp is on the Nathon side, where the jungle is thickest. Their routes climb muddy mountain tracks and hillside slopes through coconut groves and fruit farms, with panoramic stops over the Gulf of Thailand. The three-hour route includes a swim at the Secret Waterfall, and the four-hour Ultimate adds Wat Theepangkorn and the Magic Buddha Garden. Further up the west coast, the ATV/UTV Adventure with Transfer rides from Lipa Noi, but it has only 2 reviews (5.0/5) so far.

Exact stops vary. Do not assume every west-side tour reaches the same waterfall or viewpoint.

Lamai-area routes

Koh Tour’s base camp in Lamai is the shortest journey for anyone staying on the south-east coast. Their route crosses gentle rivers, coconut groves and fruit plantations, climbs to a panoramic viewpoint and stops at a waterfall when the season allows. They are also the only operator offering manual as well as automatic ATVs. Fewer operators ride from Lamai than from the north coast, so compare recent reviews and the itinerary.

Hill routes

Xplore ATV start from a base camp up in the hills, so you are on dirt within minutes of the briefing. The 2-3 Hour Xplore ATV adventure ($71, 4.9/5 from 176 reviews) runs through coconut plantations and up gentle slopes with sea views, then into the interior over small stream crossings and rocky climbs. About halfway there is a stop with a café, a zipline and a waterfall. The hotel transfer is an optional add-on.

Tours with island-wide pickup

Several operators collect from anywhere on the island and ride the central hills. Trail Blazers’ routes reach Tan Nim waterfall, the Khao Pom viewpoint and Wat Theepangkorn, depending on the length you book. The two-hour Off-Road ATV with Jungle Trails & Transfer ($67, 4.9/5 from 71 reviews) adds a temple or a waterfall stop depending on the season.

The nearest base is not automatically the best route. Shared pickup can make a more distant operator just as convenient, and the trail matters more than a shorter transfer.

Should you choose a waterfall or viewpoint tour?

Choose a waterfall route if you enjoy jungle scenery and are visiting after recent rain. Choose a viewpoint route if panoramic scenery and photography matter more.

Consider the season:

  • waterfalls may have little flow after a long dry spell;
  • rain or low cloud can hide the viewpoints;
  • wet trails can make either route slower;
  • operators may swap stops for safety reasons.

Waterfalls appear on selected two-, three- and four-hour routes and rarely on the shortest rides. On the ATV Quad Bike Safari (from $55, 4.7/5 from 1,612 reviews) the waterfall comes only with the two-hour route, and the operator says it runs roughly from November to January. Before booking a waterfall route, check:

  • whether the waterfall is guaranteed on the option you select;
  • how long the stop lasts;
  • whether swimming is allowed;
  • whether access changes after heavy rain;
  • whether the photo shown belongs to your exact route.

For views, the operator’s base and trail access matter more than the length of the tour. Look for listings that name a viewpoint, a hilltop café or lunch stop, or a mountain temple, and compare recent traveller photos, since cloud, haze and rain all change what you see. A temple stop such as Wat Theepangkorn adds variety but takes time out of the riding; if temples are your main interest, an island sightseeing tour may suit you better.

The best tour is one where the riding is still worthwhile if the natural highlight turns out less impressive than you hoped.

ATV, buggy or jeep for the jungle?

An ATV is the most active and exposed option. You steer with handlebars and respond physically to the terrain.

A buggy gives you side-by-side seats, a steering wheel and a protective frame. It usually costs more but can be more comfortable for a passenger. X Quad’s 4WD buggy tour requires the driver to hold a valid driving licence. Buggies are wider than quads and may not fit every narrow trail: some operators run both on the same main tracks, others use a separate or modified route. If you choose a buggy for comfort, confirm it still reaches the waterfall or viewpoint shown in the ATV itinerary.

A jeep safari is mainly a sightseeing day with a driver. The 4x4 off-road island safari covers more of the island and stops at several landmarks, including temples, a viewpoint and Namuang Waterfall, but you do not drive yourself. The private jungle 4x4 safari does the same for your group alone. Our ATV vs jeep safari guide compares the two on price, comfort and families.

Choose by your priority: riding, shared off-road driving or broader sightseeing.

How much do jungle ATV tours cost?

Short one-hour rides commonly start around ฿1,500–฿1,800 per driver. Two-hour tours often cost about ฿2,500–฿3,200, and longer premium tours reach ฿3,800–฿4,500 or more. These are approximate planning bands, not a live quote.

Prices vary with the route, vehicle, passenger arrangement, group size and inclusions. Check whether transfers, insurance, lunch and photographs are included.

What should you wear?

Wear closed shoes and lightweight clothes you do not mind staining. Long trousers give more protection from plants, dust and sun, and secure sunglasses help in dry conditions.

Bring:

  • a change of clothes;
  • spare socks;
  • sunscreen;
  • a waterproof phone pouch;
  • a small towel in wet weather;
  • any essential medication.

Helmets should be provided. Do not ride while holding a phone or camera. Our ATV packing list covers the details.

Which route suits you?

For a first-time rider

A one- or two-hour beginner route with wide tracks, a practice session and a patient guide, such as Lexi Adventures’ Premium 2-Hour Small-Group Jungle ATV Adventure ($85, 4.9/5 from 288 reviews).

For mountain views

A two- or three-hour route that names an elevated viewpoint. Trail Blazers’ three-hour option lists the Khao Pom viewpoint and a panoramic restaurant.

For waterfalls

A route that lists the waterfall as an inclusion. Jungle Quad’s 3 Hour ATV Secret Waterfall Adventure ($106, 4.8/5 from 20 reviews) includes the swim; elsewhere the stop depends on the season.

For mud

Any jungle route after recent rain, as long as the operator judges the trails safe.

For the most riding

A longer route with few sightseeing stops and a clearly stated trail time, such as X Quad’s four hours of remote tracks from Maenam.

For families

A shorter route that accepts child passengers, with suitable vehicles and easy access to toilets and drinks. Our family ATV tours page lists each operator’s age rules.

How to choose the best jungle tour

Compare these details:

  1. Where the ATV base is
  2. Actual riding time, and whether the duration includes the briefing and stops
  3. Which named stops are guaranteed, and whether the waterfall is seasonal
  4. How much of the route is genuine off-road riding
  5. Beginner suitability
  6. Group size
  7. Vehicle type and engine options, and whether buggies and double ATVs follow the same route
  8. Hotel transfer zones
  9. Driver and passenger prices
  10. Child age restrictions
  11. Weather and cancellation policy
  12. Recent reviews about guides and vehicle condition, and whether they match the advertised itinerary

Be cautious with vague claims such as “explore the whole island”: even a four-hour ATV tour covers only part of Koh Samui. Do not choose from dramatic photographs alone. A good itinerary, a professional guide and a suitable pace matter more than a heavily edited image.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need previous ATV experience?

Usually not for beginner-friendly routes. A briefing and practice session should be provided.

Will I see a waterfall?

Only if it is in your exact itinerary, and the water flow depends on recent weather. Do not assume every jungle tour visits one.

Are hotel transfers included?

Many tours include pickup from popular areas, but zones and surcharges vary. Confirm your hotel before paying.

Can children join?

Children may be accepted as passengers, and older children can drive on selected tours. Age and insurance rules differ by operator; see our family ATV age-limit guide.

Will the tour operate in the rain?

Often in light rain, but heavy weather or unsafe trails can lead to changes or cancellation.

Is two hours enough?

For most visitors, yes. It usually gives a much fuller route than a one-hour taster without the fatigue of a long expedition.

Can I choose my own route?

Usually not on a shared tour. You follow the guide on the operator’s approved trails. A private tour may allow more flexibility within safety and access limits.

Which area has the most ATV operators?

Bases are spread across the island: X Quad around Maenam, Jungle Quad on the Nathon side, Koh Tour in Lamai and Xplore ATV in the hills, while several others collect island-wide. Our ATV parks and operators page lists them all.

Are the routes on public roads?

Most of the riding is on private or local off-road tracks, but some routes use short connecting roads. Ask the operator if road use affects the licence rules.

Can the route change on the day?

Yes. Weather, trail damage, the group’s ability and local access can all lead to changes.

The bottom line

A Koh Samui jungle ATV tour combines the fun of driving with landscapes most beach visitors never see. The two-hour format generally offers the best balance, but the quality of the route matters more than its length.

Choose a tour with clear stops, a suitable difficulty level, good recent reviews and convenient transfers. Expect to get dusty or muddy, and treat waterfalls and viewpoints as weather-dependent extras to the main off-road ride.
