How a Private Koh Samui Off-Road Tour Works

Half Day Escape or Full Day Discovery, both shaped around you.

  1. Book the Duration, Not the Operator

One, two, three and four-hour tours run the same trails at different depths. Decide how long you want to be on a quad first — the operator matters far less than the length once you have picked.

  2. Get Collected From Your Hotel

Almost every Koh Samui ATV tour includes island-wide pickup, usually about an hour before the ride starts. The base camps sit inland around Maenam, Lamai and Nathon, so the transfer is a real part of the day.

  3. Brief, Practise, Then Ride

You are fitted with a helmet, given a safety briefing and — at the better operators — a practice session on a training area. The quads are automatic: throttle and brake, no gears, no licence needed.

  4. Trails, Viewpoint, Waterfall, Back

The route climbs through coconut groves and rubber plantations to a mountain viewpoint. Longer tours add a temple, a waterfall swim and lunch. You finish muddy at the base camp and are driven home.

The Honest Finding

There Is No 'Private ATV Tour' on Koh Samui — There Are Three Alternatives

What the catalogue actually offers couples, families and groups willing to pay more.

If you search for a private ATV tour on Koh Samui expecting to find a listing with that name, you will not find one. What the island’s catalogue actually offers is three different things that people mean when they say “private”, and they cost very different amounts.

1. A genuinely private day — with a driver

The Private Jungle 4x4 Safari ($237 for two, 4.8 from 29 groups) is the only listing on Koh Samui that is private in the full sense: your own safari truck, your own guide, your own driver, and a route you can change while you are on it.

Be clear about the trade, because it is the whole decision: you are driven, not riding. Nobody in your party holds a throttle. What you get instead is control — no shared pickups, no waiting for a convoy to reassemble, no being moved on from a viewpoint you wanted to sit at. Stay longer where you like, skip what does not appeal, add ziplining or coastal kayaking if you want to.

The Half Day Escape runs jungle trails and panoramic viewpoints to the Magic Garden with its hundreds of hand-carved statues, then the mountaintop temple at Teepangkorn, then a swim at Namuang Waterfall. The Full Day Discovery adds the Big Buddha, a Thai lunch at The Giant Summit, a working coconut plantation and time on one of the island’s quieter beaches.

Entrance fees to every stop are included, which is unusual on Koh Samui and worth counting when you compare the price against a cheaper tour that leaves you paying at each gate.

2. Per-group ATV bookings — private in practice

Several Koh Samui ATV operators price their tours per group rather than per seat, which means you are buying the booking rather than a place in someone else’s convoy.

Xplore ATV ($71, and the island’s highest-rated tour at 5.0 from 131) and Koh Tour’s Lamai-based jungle tour ($92) both sell this way for a single rider. X Quad’s driver-plus-passenger ATV tour ($225) and their four-hour buggy ($273) both cover two people for one price.

This is not the same as chartering the trail — you may still ride out alongside other bookings — but for a couple who want to self-drive and would rather not be sold two separate seats, it is the closest and cheapest approximation.

3. A small group, sorted by ability

The third thing people mean by “private” is really “not stuck behind strangers”. Lexi Adventures ($85, 4.9 from 288) solve that without charging private rates: riders are split into small groups by confidence and experience before the trail, so a couple riding at their own pace is not held to a beginner’s speed or dragged along at someone else’s.

If flexible pacing was the reason you were looking for a private tour, this is a considerably cheaper way to get it. Compared alongside the rest on our 2-hour ATV tours page.

What a private day costs, and who it suits

At $237 for two on the half day, the private safari is roughly what two people would pay for a premium X Quad ATV tour with lunch — so the premium over a good shared tour is smaller than most people assume, particularly once entrance fees are counted.

It suits families with young children, because nobody has to drive and everybody sits together; older travellers, for the same reason; and groups who want a specific itinerary rather than the operator’s standard loop. The operator lists back problems and wheelchair use as unsuitable, babies under one and children under two cannot join, and the tracks are genuinely rough.

It does not suit anyone whose reason for booking was the riding. If that is you, book a per-group ATV instead — start with ATV tour prices to see what each booking basis actually costs, or the operators page to see who runs what.
